What is Yohimbe Bark (Yohimbe Extract)?

No one should experiment with herbs without talking to their doctor – Now let’s take a quick look at Yohimbe
A relatively new ingredient has been showing up in a few supplements lately.  This ingredient is called Yohimbe Bark and it can surface in many different forms/names such as:
11-hydroxy Yohimbine, Alpha Yohimbine HCl, Coryanthe Yohimbe, Corynanthe Johimbe, Corynanthe johimbi, Corynanthe yohimbi, Johimbi, Pausinystalia yohimbe, Pausinystalia johimbe, Yohimbehe, Yohimbehe Cortex, Yohimbine, Yohimbine HCl, Yohimbinum Muriaticum.
Yohimbe is a controversial ingredient worth taking a look at.
Origins:
For many years the bark of the Yohimbe Tree has been used to treat erectile dysfunction.  The yohimbe tree is native to western Africa.  Yohimbe bark extract is also known as yohimbine.  Yohimbine is a dietary supplement made from yohimbe bark and it’s sold under various names. Yohimbine is available without a prescription, but it is not clear if it actually cures ED.
What does Yohimbe Do and why is it in my supplements? (These are theories)
  • Yohimbe dilates the blood vessels and can lower blood pressure
  • Yohimbe extracts are powerful antioxidants
  • Yohimbe can can prevent heart attacks
  • Yohimbe can act as a stimulant and an anti-depressant
  • Yohimbe can aid in weight loss
Most studies in the field are done using the drug yohimbine. Extracted chemicals are not the same as yohimbe bark. Studies with yohimbine are expected to give different results than studies that used the raw plant.
Is Yohimbe (Yohimbine) Safe?
Whether or not something is “safe” is a loaded question.  While Yohimbe and its derivatives are not illegal, the FDA has placed yohimbe on the list of unsafe herbs in March 1997. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.
